The California Science Framework (page 73) describes the origin of salt in the ocean, which is not specified in the standard. Water falling on land dissolves salts and carries it to the ocean. When ocean water evaporates, it leaves the salt behind.

Aspects that help student learning:
Having the students calculate the percentages of water in each location and measure the appropriate amounts of water (pages D6-D7) provides a valuable learning experience.
