Standard:
3a Students know most of Earth's water is present as salt water in the oceans, which cover most of Earth's surface.
Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
Pages 1-2, 14-16, and 17 in the "Water" Science Stories provide moderate coverage.
The California Science Framework (page 73) describes the origin of salt in the ocean, which is not specified in the standard. Water falling on land dissolves salts and carries it to the ocean. When ocean water evaporates, it leaves the salt behind. |
Aspects that help student learning: The standard is addressed at least three times in the text, each time in a different format (interplanetary report, text narrative, student team report).
Aspects that do not help student learning: There are no hands-on activities (e.g., to model the distribution of water in the different reservoirs of the water cycle) or graphic representations of the amounts of water in the different locations.
