Standard: Show Content Tip
5a Students know the Sun, an average star, is the central and largest body in the solar system and is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium.
Holistic Rating: Limited coverage of this standard.
| Pages 291-292 and page 295 provide very limited coverage of this standard. |
Aspects that do not help student learning: Significant parts of standard are omitted. In addition to omitting the composition of the sun, the text does not describe the sun as an average star.
In the illustration on pages 292-293, the sun looks smaller than some of the planets. The only place that could help reverse that misconception are sentences several pages later.
Teacher's Edition that we used cited these pages as addressing this standard, but we did not find a significant correlation: 184, 301.
