Standard: Show Content Tip
6d Identify the dependent and controlled variables in an investigation.

Holistic Rating: Limited coverage of this standard.
Pages S7, S11 and D27 provide limited coverage of this standard.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
The example provided on page S7 is problematic for teaching this concept because it includes multiple variables. The variables in the fruit tasting example include sight, smell, type of fruit, and texture of the fruit. The texture of each fruit sample will provide evidence, enabling students to distinguish a strawberry from an orange from a banana.

A more accurate example would have students try to distinguish two substances that felt exactly the same in the mouth but one had different tastes (e.g., puree of fruit that look and feel the same). They would then taste with and without nose clips. The nose clip would be the independent variable, the taste would be the dependent variable, and the colors and textures of the fruit would be the controlled variables. See the CONTENT TIP for this standard for more discussion.
