Standard: Show Content Tip
6f Select appropriate tools (e.g., thermometers, meter sticks, balances, and graduated cylinders) and make quantitative observations.

Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
Moderate coverage of this standard is provided by "Mixtures and Solutions" Investigation 1 (pages 16-19), Investigation 2 (pages 12-14); "Food and Nutrition" Investigation 2 (pages 11-16, 20-21, and 24-25), and Investigation 3 (pages 11-15); "Water" Investigation 2 (pages 11-13) and Investigation 3 (pages 14-16, 19-20, and 23-36); and "Solar Energy" Investigation 2 (pages 11-14 and 19-24).

Aspects that help student learning:
Students use many tools in the Investigations to make both qualitative and quantitative observations. They practice their measurement skills. In the final Investigation of each of the modules, students investigate their own questions and have opportunities to select new tools.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
Students rarely select their own tools. When students have opportunities to select their own tools, this aspect of their investigations is not highlighted. In general, cited Investigations do not teach content in Grade 5 Physical, Life, and Earth Science standards.
