1e Students know scientists have developed instruments that can create discrete images of atoms and molecules that show that the atoms and molecules often occur in well-ordered arrays.

Page C53 includes a photograph of graphite taken using a scanning tunneling microscope.
How these images are created and the reasons why atoms form well-ordered arrays are beyond the understanding of elementary age students. This standard can be taught just at the awareness level that scientists can create images of atoms, and that these images reveal that atoms can arrange themselves in a pattern of well-ordered arrays. |
