Aspects that help student learning:
Magnetizing a needle, then suspending it, and then testing the effects of a bar magnet on it provides direct experience with the standard.


Aspects that do not help student learning:
Illustration on page C48 could be confusing. Illustration should have shown compass on planet Earth pointing toward the north, instead of compasses outside of the planet pointing in different directions.

Students can get confused that the north pole of a compass is a north-seeking pole but Earth's north pole is not north-seeking. Instead, it attracts north-seeking poles (see CONTENT TIP).
