Standard: Show Content Tip
1c Students know electric currents produce magnetic fields and know how to build a simple electromagnet.

Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
Pages C50-C55 and C62-C63 provide moderate coverage of this standard.

Aspects that help student learning:
The activity on pages C50-C51 shows that flowing electric current produces a magnetic field. The text and diagrams on pages C52-C55 reinforce this concept and nicely contrast an electromagnet with a permanent magnet.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
Students do not necessarily have experience building electromagnets. Assessment items number 30 and 31 on page C63 involve students in hypothetically, not physically, building an electromagnet.

Diagram on page C53 can be confusing. Make sure students realize that current is flowing through the wire loops around the pencil. Make sure they understand that the alligator clip holding the pencil is not part of the circuit, and is there only for physical support. The diagram on the upper half of page C55 may be confusing in that it does not show the wires as being part of a circuit.
