Standard: Show Content Tip
1d Students know the role of electromagnets in the construction of electric motors, electric generators, and simple devices, such as doorbells and earphones.

Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
Pages D57-D64 and D70-D72 provide moderate coverage of this standard.

Aspects that help student learning:
Illustration on page D72 shows the role of an electromagnet in the functioning of a doorbell.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
Text does not sufficiently help explain how electric motors and generators work. It is a daunting task to explain how these devices work at a level that is both accurate, s and that can also make sense to and be remembered by students. The operation of motors and generators are very advanced concepts for 4th grade students, so the focus must be on the very general role that electromagnets play in these devices (see CONTENT TIP).
