Standard: Show Content Tip
1d Students know the role of electromagnets in the construction of electric motors, electric generators, and simple devices, such as doorbells and earphones.

Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
Pages 334-337, 339-343 and 356-359 provide moderate coverage of this standard.

Aspects that help student learning:
Text provides numerous examples and illustrations of simple devices, such as the doorbell on page 335.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
The illustration on page 336 shows how a model motor could be set up, but students will not understand it from this figure. Text does not sufficiently help explain how electric motors and generators work. It is a daunting task to explain how these devices work at a level that is both accurate, and that can also make sense to and be remembered by students. The operation of motors and generators are very advanced concepts for 4th grade students, so the focus must be on the very general role that electromagnets play in these devices (see CONTENT TIP).

Material on alternating current, other types of cells, transformers, and electricity distribution are extraneous to the standards.
