Standard: Show Content Tip
1d Students know the role of electromagnets in the construction of electric motors, electric generators, and simple devices, such as doorbells and earphones.

Holistic Rating: In-Depth coverage of this standard.
Investigations 4 and 5 in the "Magnetism and Electricity" module and pages 28-33 in "Science Stories" provide in-depth coverage of this standard.

Aspects that help student learning:
"Science Stories" provides extensive text and illustrations for the operation of motors and generators. It is a daunting task to explain how these devices work at a level that is both accurate, and that can also make sense to and be remembered by students. The operation of motors and generators are very advanced concepts for 4th grade students, so the focus must be on the very general role that electromagnets play in these devices. The text and illustrations explaining motors and generators succeed in this daunting task.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
Hands-on experience is limited to electromagnets and a telegraph.
