Standard: Show Content Tip
2b Students know how blood circulates through the heart chambers, lungs, and body and how carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2) are exchanged in the lungs and tissues.

Holistic Rating: In-Depth coverage of this standard.
The figures and text on the pages A16-A18 and R34-37 convey the main concept about the functional connections between the heart and lungs.

Aspects that help student learning:
Text reinforces the concept of body systems working together, and teaches the big idea of how the circulatory and respiratory systems work together.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
The California Science Framework distinguishes between the functioning of the left and right sides of the heart. The left side of the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the tissues, and the right side of the heart pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs. This is not explicitly stated in the standard, and is not clearly described in the text. Note that the right and left sides of the heart are described from the perspective of the person looking out from their body. Thus, the right side of the heart is shown on the left in the diagram. This could be confusing to students unless it is explained to them.

Text includes some emphasis on extraneous terms such as platelets.
