Standard: Show Content Tip
2f Students know plants use carbon dioxide (CO2) and energy from sunlight to build molecules of sugar and release oxygen.

Holistic Rating: In-Depth coverage of this standard.
Pages A74-A75 and A102-A107 provide in-depth coverage of this standard. Pages A68-A69 introduce how plants make food, but include many extraneous terms. Pages A70-A71 and A132 include activities related to this standard.

Aspects that help student learning:
Text revisits the main concepts several times.

Aspects that do not help student learning:
Text includes extraneous terminology and concepts that are highlighted in bold and illustrated.

Illustration on pages A74-A75 mistakenly states that sunlight provides the energy for all life on Earth and for all ocean organisms. There are ecosystems (such as deep ocean hydrothermal vents) that use chemical sources of energy rather than the sun. Also pages A76-A77 mistakenly state that carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels and cutting down trees is a problem because carbon dioxide is poisonous to animals and humans. Actually, this is not the problem associated with these activities. The problem is that the additional carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases Earth's greenhouse effect, and may thereby cause significant global changes to Earth's climate
