Aspects that help student learning: Students do a lot of observing and inferring in the course of the investigations. They make explanations based on a combination of observations and interpretations.
Aspects that do not help student learning: The instructional materials do not use the term "inferring," and do not have students consciously distinguish their observations from their inferences.
