Standard: Show Content Tip
1a During chemical reactions, the atoms in the reactants rearrange to form products with different properties.
Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
| Pages C33, C39-C40, C48-C49, C67, C68-C70 and C91-92 provide in-depth coverage of this standard except for the concept of atoms in the reactants rearranging. |
Aspects that help student learning: Pages C33, C39-C40, C48-C49, and C67 all involve activities with or descriptions of reactions that form products with different properties. The text includes many examples of compounds highlighting that the compound has different properties than its constituent parts. Pages C68-C70 and C91-92 provide graphics illustrating chemical reactions. The California Science Framework recommends having students identify the reactants and products when observing and discussing chemical reactions.
Aspects that do not help student learning: Text does not explicitly state that atoms in the reactants rearrange to form the products. Illustrations on pages C70 and C92 show that concept but do not use the words of the standard. As described in the CONTENT TIP for this standard, modeling the electrolysis of water (C69-C70) and the respiration reaction (combination of sugar and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water) help illustrate this concept. The respiration reaction is in the life sciences standards for this grade level.
