Standard: Show Content Tip
6d Identify the dependent and controlled variables in an investigation.
Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
Aspects that help student learning: Investigation on pages A100-A101 provides moderate coverage of this standard.
Aspects that do not help student learning: Some good investigations that are cited as meeting this standard do not focus on identifying dependent and controlled variables. Further, because of the way they are designed, they may confuse students with respect to identifying the dependent and controlled variables. For example, the activity on pages B38-B39 involves cooling as well as heating, thus making it difficult to focus on identifying the dependent and controlled variables. Note also that in the cooling part of the experiment, the materials start at different temperatures. The activity on pages C20-C21 has too many variables to clearly teach this I&E standard. Other cited investigations include A108-A109, A131, C56.
Teacher's Edition that we used cited these pages as addressing this standard, but we did not find a significant correlation: A86-87, A106-107, A114-115, A124-125, C84-85, C88-89
