Pages 256-264 provide moderate coverage of this standard, using the language of the standard and explaining the differences between physical and chemical changes. Pages 214-215, 221, 244-245, 265-269, and 282-284 provide some background and extensions related to the standard, but do not use the language of the standard (products, reactants, atoms rearranging).


Aspects that do not help student learning:
The graphic of the equation on page 260 implies that the atoms rearrange but does not illustrate it. As described in the CONTENT TIP for this standard, students can model the respiration reaction (combination of sugar and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water) to help teach this concept which can be difficult for fifth grade students. This reaction is in the life sciences standards for this grade level.
