Standard: Show Content Tip
1d Students know that each element is made of one kind of atom and that the elements are organized in the periodic table by their chemical properties.
Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.
| Pages 3-6, 25-26, and 32-36 in the "Mixtures and Solutions" Science Stories provide moderate coverage of this standard. The periodic table is organized by atomic number which relates to the number of protons in the atom's nucleus. Since the text has not introduced the concept of subatomic particles such as protons (see Standard 1b), it simply states that the atomic number increases as one goes from left to right and from top to bottom, and that atomic number refers to the number of parts inside the atom. |
Aspects that help student learning: Historical background on periodic table helps put it in perspective and illustrates how scientific ideas develop.
Aspects that do not help student learning: Text provides limited experiences with elements and does not encourage students to engage with the information in the periodic table. See the CONTENT TIP for this standard for additional resources on the periodic table.
