1e Students know scientists have developed instruments that can create discrete images of atoms and molecules that show that the atoms and molecules often occur in well-ordered arrays.

| Pages 26 in the "Mixtures and Solutions" Science Stories includes an image of silicon atoms taken with a scanning tunneling microscope. How these images are created and the reasons why atoms form well-ordered arrays are beyond the understanding of elementary age students. This standard can be taught just at the awareness level that scientists can create images of atoms, and that these images reveal that atoms can arrange themselves in a pattern of well-ordered arrays. Text uses the more understandable phrase "patterns that repeat" rather than the phrase "well-ordered arrays." |
