1f Students know differences in chemical and physical properties of substances are used to separate mixtures and identify compounds.

Pages 242-267 provide moderate coverage of this standard.

The term "identify compounds" in this standard has two meanings. One is that you can identify what a compound is (a substance made of two or more elements chemically combined with each other). The other is that you can tell which compound a substance is (e.g., distinguishing sugar, saccharine, and aspartame). To understand this standard, students need to know that scientists use physical and chemical properties to distinguish among compounds and to determine the identity of a specific compound. As explained in the California Science Framework (page 69), "every compound has a unique set of chemical and physical properties that can be used to identify it." Aspects that help student learning:
Pages 242-247 provide a good introduction to mixtures, and the contrast between mixtures and compounds. Pages 258-259 include some further examples of using physical means to separate mixtures.


Aspects that do not help student learning:
Pages 248-255 provide extraneous information that is in neither the standards nor the framework. Text provides little or no assistance with understanding how to identify different compounds.
