Standard: Show Content Tip
1g Students know properties of solid, liquid, and gaseous substances, such as sugar (C6H12O6), water (H2O), helium (He), oxygen (O2), nitrogen (N2), and carbon dioxide (CO2).
Holistic Rating: Limited coverage of this standard.
| "Mixtures and Solutions" Investigation 3 (pages 11-14, 17-20, 23-24, and 27-28) and Science Stories pages 13-15 and 20-22 provide limited coverage. |
Aspects that do not help student learning: Text does not compare the physical properties of solids, liquids, and gases (e.g., gases expand to fill all the available volume or that liquids adapt to the shape of their container). Text does not relate the properties of solids, liquids and gases to how their constituent molecules connect with each other, nor does it investigate transitions from one physical state to another. In terms of physical properties, the focus is on dissolving, saturation, and concentration (Investigation 3).
