Standard: Show Content Tip
2b Students know how blood circulates through the heart chambers, lungs, and body and how carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2) are exchanged in the lungs and tissues.
Holistic Rating: Moderate coverage of this standard.

Correlations in beginning section (page 16) of the Teacher's Edition that we used incorrectly lists Unit A Chapter 2 Investigation 1 and incorrectly omits Unit A Chapter 2 Investigation 2, and Unit A Chapter 3 Investigation 1. Correlations within the body of the Teacher's Edition were correct.
Pages A46-A49 provide moderate coverage with respect to the respiratory system and pages A54-A57 provide moderate coverage with respect to the circulatory system. |
Aspects that help student learning: Illustrations on pages A48 and A49 shows where the gas exchange occurs in the lungs.
Aspects that do not help student learning: The illustrations and accompanying text on pages A56 and A57 contain the correct information, but do not clearly show how blood flows between the heart and the lungs. It does not help students understand that the lungs are on a separate circuit of the circulatory system.
The California Science Framework distinguishes between the functioning of the left and right sides of the heart. This is not explicitly stated in the standard, but is covered in illustrations in the text.
Note that the right and left sides of the heart are described from the perspective of the person looking out from their body. Thus, the right side of the heart is shown on the left in the diagram. This could be confusing to students unless it is explained to them.
