MARK WILSON

Mark Wilson researches measurement and assessment. He works to develop new psychometric models for analyzing data from theory-rich contexts. His recently published articles on this interest include "A Theory of the Measurement of Knowledge Content, Access, and Learning, in Psychological Review" (with P. Pirolli, 1998); and "The Multidimensional Random Coefficients Multinomial Logit Model,” in Applied Psychological Measurement (with R. Adams and W. Wang, 1997).

Wilson is also concerned with the application of current measurement theory to more practical problems of testing and evaluation. A recent publication that illustrates his work in this area is "Multilevel Item Response Models: An Approach to Errors in Variables Regression," in the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics (with R. Adams and M. Wu).

A third aspect of his work is the development of assessment resources that are useful to teachers in classrooms. He has been working with a project based at the Lawrence Hall of Science to create an assessment system that complements their middle school science curriculum, and has recently been awarded a National Science Foundation grant to further develop aspects of the assessment system. He is the editor on a book series that collects papers on measurement and testing: Objective Measurement: Theory into Practice (Vols. I-V).

Wilson is also a convenor of the Berkeley Evaluation and Assessment Research (BEAR) Center. He is on the advisory board for an NSF-funded Systemic Initiative: the California Systemic Initiative Assessment Collaborative, and on the editorial board for an internet-based journal: Methods of Psychological Research-Online. He is also advising the California State Department of Education on assessment issues as a member of the Technical Study Group.

About the University of California, Berkeley

The Berkeley Evaluation and Assessment Research Center, better known as BEAR Center, is based at the University of California, Berkeley, in direct affiliation with the Graduate School of Education. Since 1994, BEAR Center has conducted research on the integration of assessment (the measurement of individual students) and evaluation (the study of educational and social interventions). At the core of BEAR Center's research is the development and use of appropriate assessment methods for evaluating students, schools, and educational policy, and the reform of educational evaluation away from the use of inappropriate standardized tests. To these ends, BEAR Center has become a leader in the use of advanced analytic models and novel reporting modes that more accurately reflect the multilayered nature of education.
