Description:
Staff and students at Birmingham Senior High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District have begun the slow and difficult process of improving student achievement for all students. An extremely large comprehensive high school, Birmingham faces many challenges. One of the strategies the administration at Birmingham uses to overcome these challenges is finding ways to split the school up into smaller communities for both students and staff. The desired level of absolute achievement for all students has yet to be reached, but the achievement gap is beginning to close. The Birmingham community is seeing the greatest gains with traditionally underserved groups. Over the last two years at Birmingham, the scores of African American and Latino students have increased significantly. more »
