I can't really argue that adaptation of a model to a new setting isn't important, but I think we have to recognize that there's a balance to be struck here. If you really want to scale up an idea, there has to be some standardization -- systems that you are going to reuse in the new setting. In fact, standardization of SOME systems is what makes it possible to devote the attention needed to adapting others. If you're inventing everything from scratch in the new setting, you probably won't have time to put into quality development of all the needed systems.
The key is figuring out, for a given model, what to standardize and what to leave loose. I think all the franchisers, from the Edisons to the KIPPs to the EdVisions, are grappling with that.
