The Young Readers - Future Leaders Early Literacy Conference took place Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30, 2005 in San Jose, California.
More than 45 organizations supporting the development of young children and families attended this historic gathering, which further strengthened the connection between parents and early educators.
A growing number of interventions have focused on family literacy as a key strategy for improving the home learning environment for young children. Some programs offer intergenerational literacy activities that include child and adult interaction, as well as parenting education. At this conference, the WestEd E3 Institute presented the most current information about promising practices in early education and policy related to literacy.
- stimulate interest in oral language expression;
- engage adults with children in language activities;
- model and demonstrate positive use of print rich materials;
- integrate cultural and linguistically appropriate materials;
- inform professionals and parents on the latest research and best
practices in early literacy; and
- provide effective assessment techniques to support professionals in the selection of appropriate language development strategies
