POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center seeks an experienced outdoor education professional to serve as its Executive Director. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for fundraising, program design and oversight, hiring and management of staff, financial oversight, strategic planning and implementation. The person hired will lead a team of 10 made up of educators, facilities and kitchen staff, a development assistant and a part time bookkeeper. He or she is also responsible for building relationships with NGOs, government agencies, individuals and businesses to accomplish the goals of the organization. The ideal candidate will be passionate about Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center?s mission. The candidate?s strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills will be evident in a track record of successful development, management and communications experience at other organizations. This candidate will possess a familiarity with the ecological, cultural, economic and political landscape of the Pacific Northwest. The candidate should have a strong familiarity with Oregon environmental education and outdoor recreation opportunities, funding sources, and resources. Specific technical knowledge and experience in environmental education, natural history, forestry, or related fields is highly desirable. Primary Responsibilities:  Diversify and expand unrestricted and program-restricted funding  Lead a team comprising of the Program Director, Program Assistant, Development Assistant, Facilities Director and Office Manager to implement the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center? strategic plan, develop and execute annual operational plans (including budgets), and address programmatic challenges and opportunities as they arise.  Build membership in and community awareness of the organization  Effectively represent the organization and communicate its mission, objectives and programs to a wide range of constituencies, including donors, partner organizations, clients and government officials.  Facilitate and lead institutional development efforts, including fundraising events.  Further develop management systems that enhance the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center? on-going operations. Other Responsibilities:  Develop effective partnerships with other organizations, government agencies, businesses, schools and other entities.  Maintain the highest professional and ethical standards for the organization in all its activities and relationships.  Create and maintain a working environment conducive to personal growth, creative work and high productivity.  Track organizational performance and effectiveness.  Conduct job interviews, performance evaluations and reviews, exit reviews Requirements:  A demonstrated long term commitment to the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center mission.  Strong interpersonal skill with managerial experience.  Strong verbal, written and presentation communications skills.  Demonstrated success in major gifts fundraising, annual fund development, grant writing and grants management. Planned giving experience is a plus.  Strong contacts in the Northwest giving community.  Experience developing and managing budgets.  Computer literate with MS office Word and Excel. Worked with or can adjust to Quickbooks.  Ability to lead and serve as a member of a multi-disciplinary, professional team.  Willingness to travel between Portland and Opal Creek one or two days a week. Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center is a non-profit organization. The main facility is 15 acres of private property uniquely located at an old mining camp at the headwaters of The Little North Fork River in the North Oregon Cascades. We are surrounded by thousands of acres of wilderness and wild and scenic National Forest. Our mission is promoting ancient forest stewardship through educational experiences inspired by Opal Creek's natural and cultural history. The Executive Director is based from a Portland, Oregon office with two support team members and will travel to Opal Creek as needed. The Center has seasonal programs on the flora and fauna of the surrounding forest, the geology of the ground, humanities, and a nationally known wilderness first responder program for training and certification. We provide a base for environmental science instruction for area schools and a summer camp for local children. Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center? cabins and lodge at Jawbone Flats can house up to 60 students for training and research. We will have a rebuilt multi-purpose instructional / research / performance / meeting space ready for the 2007 season. We provide housing for up to 10 staff, long-term volunteers, visiting researchers or others. The cabins provide revenue through renting to individuals, groups and corporate retreats. Drinking water and electrical power to our facilities are from our own hydro system. There is no cell phone service in this remote forest area so telecommunications is handled via either a radio link to our off-site location or through a satellite Internet link. Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center also owns an off-site 40 acre ranch for organic gardening, an accounting office and storage for vehicles. This property is destined to be planted with a variety of native trees as part of a carbon offset program.
