  1. Save The Bay's summer opportunities for Educators!
    05/11/2007 15:25:36 Alicia Moore
    Greetings Educators!
Save The Bay is gearing up for a fun summer season of learning and inspiration. This year we are excited to offer two fabulous opportunities for Educators: Our 2-day Sloughs And Stewardship workshop (June 26 & 27); and our 2-week Summer Institute (July 30 – August 10 with partner organization the Exploratorium). For more information and to download applications, please visit the links below. Both courses still have spaces available, so please forward this information to anyone who may be interested. Thank you!

Summer Workshop: Sloughs and Stewardship (June 26th & 27th)
Join Save The Bay staff for a two-day summer workshop, Sloughs & Stewardship, as we explore the richness and splendor of San Francisco Bay in two different regions. During this workshop, you will experience our Canoes In Sloughs and Community-based Restoration programs first hand, and will discover how to integrate watershed concepts and San Francisco Bay curriculum into your teaching. Guaranteed to refresh you and revitalize your teaching for the year ahead, Save The Bay's Summer Workshop will be an experience you won't soon forget! Go to www.saveSFbay.org/workshop to learn more and join us!

Summer Institute: Gold Rush to the Golden Gate (July 30th – August 10th)
Save The Bay’s Summer Teacher Institute offers teachers the opportunity to spend two weeks exploring and experiencing the San Francisco Bay-Delta and California’s largest watershed. This year we are excited to partner with the Exploratorium to provide an institute filled with on-the-water experiences, expert speakers, and hands-on activities that help teachers incorporate watershed education into their curriculum. Our most popular institute, Gold Rush to the Golden Gate, offers an introduction to the cultural, political and natural history of San Francisco Bay’s watershed. The trip begins by canoeing in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and ends on a sailboat passing under the Golden Gate Bridge. Continuing Education Units are available for this course from Dominican University.
Go to www.saveSFbay.org/institute to learn more and join us! Application deadline for the Institute is May 15th.

  5. Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence
    11/14/2005 09:35:56 Jeanette Palkovic
    Hello,

My name is Jeanette Palkovic and I work in the Amgen Foundation for the biotechnology company, Amgen. As you may know, Amgen has a program that recognizes leadership in teaching in science for K-12 instructors. Winners of our program receive a $5,000 award in addition to their school receiving a $5,000 award to further science-related education. It's a small way to thank science educators for furthering science in the classroom.

Amgen opened nominations for the program last Thursday and further information can be found on our website, http://www.amgen.com/citizenship/aaste.html.

Although we have received excellent nominations for California educators in the past, I don't believe this program is widely known across the state.

Additionally, I have attached a flyer we have created this year that we wish to send out to science teachers who may be interested in the program. If this is something you could help us with, I would be so thankful.

The deadline for nominations is January 31, 2006.

    To be eligible, nominees must:
    * Be full-time, K-12 classroom teachers whose major responsibilities include teaching science
    * Have at least three years of experience teaching science in grades K-12
    * Work in communities where Amgen has key operating sites: California, Colorado, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Washington, or Puerto Rico

    Thank you for your time.

Environmental Learning Institute and Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship
Foundation is fielding professional development workshops in British Columbia, Canada. This summer 2005 workshop offers intermediate-secondary science educators opportunities to
learn more about inquiry-based science education philosophy, pedagogy and
praxis and global environmental change while learning about a threatened
North American ecosystem of global significance. Each course has a dual
tract structure in biology and geology allowing the participant to
specialize in their discipline of interest. Geology and biology faculty
supervise all courses. We invite applications from appropriate
pre-service & in-service teachers, education and environment graduate
student, science education professors (teacher of teachers) and science
education professionals (e.g. park, museum and outdoor center affiliated).
The workshops are possible due to the support of the Environmental
    Learning Institute (www.environmentallearning.org), Woodrow Wilson
National Fellowship Foundation, the New Mexico Institute of Mining &
Technology Masters in Science Teaching Program and the Colorado School of
    Mines Teacher Enhancement Program.

Coast Alive! is a new project created by the California Institute for Biodiversity, California State Parks Foundation, and California State Parks for 5th-9th grade teachers and their students. The project is a novel approach designed to put California's content standards in a context that is meaningful to you and your students. Coast Alive! is delivered to students through teacher professional development and incorporates interactive computer technology and solid lessons in literacy, science, math and social science. Students extend and apply classroom lessons to field investigations.

Thanks to the generosity to our funders, the Coastal Conservancy, Toyota, EFA and California Coastal Commission, we are pleased to announce that resource materials, classroom activities and field study experiences are complimentary, less a $10 registration fee upon enrollment. In addition, all teachers who complete the two-day workshop will receive a $100 stipend. Friday night dinner and Saturday refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Because of the rich experiences this project offers to teachers, workshops will fill quickly. Register early! On a lighter note...
I just recieved another in a series of requests for info about school gardens and funding them. While this is one of, if not the most, hectic time of year I thought I would just get this out there and by September I would have plenty of good connections.

I have already worked with indivdual schools working with standards and garden science... and found the following potential funders but would like to share what I have and hear what else I have missed.
