    06/14/2010 10:01:53 Annie Kohut Frankel
Please see announcement below about an upcoming institute being offered
    by the Exploratorium.

    _____

The Exploratorium Teacher Institute invites you to apply to our:

"Understanding Plastics And Marine Debris in Our Watershed" Institute

    August 2-6, 8:30 AM-2:00 PM

Join us as we explore the roles of plastics and other marine debris in
our watershed. Through hands-on explorations and local field trips, we
will examine sources of plastic and marine debris, types of plastic,
recycling data, plastics chemistry, effect on marine organisms, ocean
currents and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and stewardship projects,
such as Coastal Cleanup Day. Using historical maps and NOAA resources,
we will highlight the effects of plastic and marine debris within local
watersheds as well as the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Time
will be provided during the Institute for teachers to pursue areas of
personal interest, including meeting in small groups to adapt institute
ideas to their own curricula. Preference will be given to secondary
teachers from Oakland Unified School District and San Francisco Unified
    District.

Teachers attending this institute will be paid a $250 stipend, and will
have the opportunity to sign up for 3 CEUs through the University of the
Pacific. Additionally, teachers will be offered an additional stipend
for sharing their institute experiences with other teachers through
conferences, staff development days, etc., though this is not a program
    requirement.

This Institute is the first in a series focusing on watershed science
and specific issues affecting our watershed. This series is generously
funded by the NOAA B-WET program, http://www.oesd.noaa.gov/BWET/
. Follow up Saturday Workshops will be
offered during the 2010/2011 school year. Attendance at these follow-up
workshops is not required. Subsequent summer institutes are also
    planned.

    The application is attached.

  5. Education Advisory Board/Mountain Lion Project
    05/04/2010 13:14:19 Laura Powell
Felidae Conservation Fund is currently actively seeking members for our
    newly forming Advisory Board.

In case you don't know us, Felidae Conservation Fund is working to save big
cats and other feline species all over the world through grant projects to
top scientists in the field. The newest direction of our work is to
educate communities, particularly secondary students, about co-existing with
the big cats (especially local ones) and related habitats in their
communities. We are working to develop state-of-the-art projects for
students that make interactive use of technology and live viewing of big
cats via our cameras in the wild.

In California, Felidae is concerned with helping the survival of the
mountain lion, and is launching three projects in Santa Cruz, the East Bay,
and Marin County which study the mountain lion via GPS radio satellite radio
tracking. The information gathered from the project will ultimately help
us understand mountain lion habitat, reproduction and feeding needs, and may
result in the creation of wildlife corridors across highways.

Currently Felidae Conservation Fund is actively seeking educators to join
our Education Advisory Board and oversee curriculum development. We are
particularly interested in asking Science and Technology Educators and
Administrators for their help on the committee. We are also interested in
Environmental Educators, particularly those with a dual background as a
Science teacher and Environmental Educator. We are particularly seeking
those working in our project areas: Santa Cruz, the East Bay, and Marin.

Commitment: We are hoping to work on this over the summer. Availability
from June-September for meetings (excepting vacations!). Most meetings
    will be in Marin County,
although some may be done through teleconferencing or shift location as need
    be.
Approximate time commitment is 25 hours.

This puma project promises to be very exciting, using cutting edge
technology and linked to current radio tracking in our local mountains. If
you or anyone you know is interested, please contact me at your earliest
    convenience.

    Sonoma County Quest Workshop

    Creating Community Treasure Hunts

    When: April 20 - 21, 2010 (Tuesday & Wednesday, 9 to 5)

    Where: Occidental, California

Westminster Woods Camp and Conference Center and Salmon Creek School

    What's a "Quest?"

A place based "treasure" hunt that can be made by children and adults
    working

together, often in rhyme and leading to a treasure in the community.
    Questing is a

great way for the community to celebrate its rich natural and cultural
    history, stories,

and special places. Quests can be created for unstructured use by
    children/families, or

created to focus on particular curricular objectives. Parks, educational
    programs, and

museums are using Quests as "compelling interpretive tools". Questing is
    one way to

encourage citizens from both near and far away to utilize their senses
    to experience

more of this special place we call home.

    Who should attend:

Community groups, teachers, outdoor educators, park educators, cultural
    educators, anyone interested.

    Cost ~ Housing ~ Food

We are asking each participating organization to pay $250. Two people
from each organization could attend. Individual and teachers are $125.
per person. Cost includes housing and 4 meals. We are currently seeking
    additional funding for scholarships.

Please contact us if you have any interest and additional questions.

    Our Instructor:

Steven Glazer, co-author of Questing: A Guide to Creating Community
