Kendall Zoller's new book "The Choreography of Presenting: The 7 Essential Abilities of Effective Presenters"
01/06/2010 09:36:48 Deanna Maier
Hello Fellow Fellows:
Hope this email finds you all doing well and enduring the struggles and challenges of the year’s past economic chaos.
This email is an announcement of the release of our first book on presentation skills. Those that attended past NASMEL sessions in Breckenridge, Tucson, Seattle and other locations may be pleased to finally have the nonverbal and verbal patterns presented in those sessions in writing. The book is published by Corwin Press (www.corwinpress.com) and is scheduled to be released January 12, 3 months ahead of schedule.
Take a look at the Corwin site to read about some of the support from Grant Wiggins, Bob Garmston, Michael Grinder, Page Keeley, and others. (http://www.corwin.com/booksProdDesc.nav?prodId=Book233312&)
Enjoy, and I look forward to hearing from you. I can be reached at kvzoller@ftcnet.net
Be well,
Kendall

WestEd's evaluation of the Public Broadcasting System’s TeacherLine Peer Connection
07/07/2009 10:29:19 Deanna Maier
[Please contact Bob Allen (ballen@wested.org) or the project director, Dr. Betsy McCarthy (bmccart@wested.org) if you need more information.]
WestEd is conducting an evaluation of the Public Broadcasting System’s TeacherLine Peer Connection. PBSTL PC is an online professional development and collaboration tool for on-site mentors and instructional coaches in math and ELA. We are inviting schools and districts across the country to take part in this study and receive free school-wide access to PBS TeacherLine PC for two years. Participation also includes generous stipends for mentors and coaches ($600 - $1000) and teachers ($400).
You can learn more about the study at: http://www.wested.org/teacherline/.
There are two ways to preview TeacherLine PC. (PBS suggests using Mozilla Firefox 3.0 as your browser.)
1. Log on as a Guest: Go to http://www.pbs.org/tlqa/peerconnection/, Username: “visitor” and Password: “teacher”. This will give you an example of the features that will be on the Peer Connection site.
2. Become a registered user: Request an invitation by sending an email to Bob Allen at ballen@wested.org. Then, you'll receive an email notice with your own username and instructions to log onto Peer Connection.
Ideas for activities when logged on:
1. When you log into the site, click the Help button in the upper right hand corner. The Peer Connection FAQ will give you a brief overview of the terms used on PBS TeacherLine.
2. Try searching for professional development content. Click “Search” at the top of the first page, then choose “Content” on the second page. Search for terms such as “math” or “inquiry.” Once you search, you can narrow your results by clicking categories on the left side of the window. Then you can explore various forms of content available to you. Later you can go back to “My Peer Connection,” and explore various tools for sharing, collaborating, and communicating.
3. Try joining and creating various groups and discussions. We’ve set up a few for you to explore. You can also search for networks. Try searching for “textbooks” under Community. Feel free to create groups or networks, or add content.
This is a demo site that is not linked to outside groups. In the version of TeacherLine PC that will be used in the study, there will be links to many networks outside of their schools or districts (i.e. math or ELA coaches across the U.S.).
Thank you for considering participating in this study. Please forward this information to any colleagues you think might be interested.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please contact Bob Allen (ballen@wested.org) or the project director, Dr. Betsy McCarthy (bmccart@wested.org) if you need more information.

From Page Keeley, Subject: Summer Institute on Professional Learning Communities in Science: Designs, Tools, and Resources for Improving Student Learning
05/28/2009 10:19:17 Deanna Maier
Dear NASMEL Colleagues,
As I near the end of my NSTA Presidency, I want to thank you for the support many of you have given me in pursuing several new NSTA initiatives this year. One of those initiatives is for NSTA to begin offering summer institutes around a specific topic. We are starting this summer with the topic of "PLC's", providing a professional development institute and resources that move PLC's beyond a generic focus to one that is science specific. I am pleased to announce that the book I commissioned during my presidency, Professional Learning Communities for Science Teaching- Lessons from Research and Practice is now available through NSTA Press, edited by our NASMEL leaders, Susan Mundry and Kathy Stiles, and includes chapters written by several of our NASMEL colleagues!
The summer institute, Professional Learning Communities in Science: Designs, Tools, and Resources for Improving Student Learning, will be held in Orlando, FL on Aug 3-5. Orlando was chosen as flights and hotels are inexpensive during the summer months. The registration fee is $300. Everyone will receive a copy of the new NSTA PLC book. Susan Mundry will be leading the conference and break out sessions will be offered by some of the chapter contributors. The link to the conference is at: http://www.nsta.org/conferences/2009/summerinstitute.aspx?lid=hp
Because this is a new venture for NSTA and many people may not be aware of it, I would really appreciate your help in getting the word out to as many networks, projects involving PLC's, and leaders as you can. I hope to see some of you there as well. Please feel free to forward this message. We hope to get district leaders involved in PLC work, MSP Directors who are using the PLC strategy in their projects, science teachers leading PLC's, and anyone interested in learning more about PLC's with a science focus. We know $ is tight this year but the investment in this conference pays off in building the capacity for districts to lead their own PD during the school year.
Thanks again for all your support and help this year. I hope to see several of you at this conference as well as the NSELA SLI in June.
Also, as an update, Susan Mundry, Carolyn Landel, and I are pleased to announce the Leader's Guide to Science Curriculum Topic Study- Designs, Tools, and Resources for Professional Learning, by S. Mundry, P. Keeley, and C. Landel is in production at Corwin Press and should be available in December 2009. Stay tuned!
Best,

BSCS Seeks Field-test Teachers
05/20/2009 11:54:05 Deanna Maier
BSCS is seeking eighth grade middle school science teachers to field test a standards- and inquiry-based unit between November 2009 and March 2010. The overall goal of the project is to improve learning in science for all students. Teacher-collaborators will choose one major content area from an eighth grade multidisciplinary science program currently under development (Life Science, Earth/Space Science, Physical Science, or Science and Society) and will teach a unit on that content area to their students. Teacher and student feedback will play a key role in informing the revision of the materials.
As a former classroom teacher, I can assure you that BSCS is developing this program with the best approaches to student learning in mind. These approaches are based on current research in learning and teaching for conceptual understanding and include literacy strategies, sense-making strategies, and a constructivist approach to teaching/learning science. Each unit addresses standards that closely align with state and national standards for eighth grade science.
Field testing will begin the second week of November, 2009, and will continue through the end of March, 2010 or until you complete the unit. Selected field test teachers will also be invited to consider field testing the revised materials in the 2010-2011 school year. BSCS will provide additional support for the implementation of the revised materials.
We are excited about working with classroom teachers around the country to develop leadership in teaching multidisciplinary science. If you are interested in field testing an eighth grade science unit, please visit www.bscs.org/inquiry8 for additional information and to download an application .
Submit your application by 15 June 2009 to be given priority status and receive a free gift bag. The final application deadline is 25 September 2009 .
Please pass on this information to any of your colleagues who might be interested. We look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you,
Sue

Teachers – Earn Recertification Credit in our 5-day Summer Grantwriting Course in Fairbanks, Alaska
The Alaska Funding Exchange will offer two sessions of their popular 5-day Grantwriting Intensive at the beginning and end of the 2009 summer break. Each class is eligible for 2.0 hours of 500-level Professional Development credit which can be applied toward state teacher recertification. Located at the University of Alaska Fairbanks/Tanana Valley Campus (403 Barnette Street) in Fairbanks, Alaska the class will be held 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day. Cost is $1560, which includes PD credit fees from UAF.
