The Pacific Forest and Watershed Lands Stewardship Council (Stewardship Council) is a private, nonprofit foundation that was established in 2004. We have two goals: to ensure that over 140,000 acres of pristine watershed lands located in the Sierra Nevada and the Cascade Mountain Range are conserved for the public good through our Land Conservation Program, and to invest in outdoor programs that serve California's young people through our Youth Investment Program.

  5. Sad news
    03/17/2008 12:45:18 Kim Stokely
    Dear Adopt-A-Watershed Community,

I have sad news. One of our participants, Fran Abbott, recently passed away. I filled with sorrow from this news. When I think of Fran, I think of a whirlwind force in the world. It is hard to imagine the world without her immense passion and enthusiasm. I send this poem to you and to Fran with love.

I hope you are all well. With great fondness. Kim

    BEANNACHT (blessing)
    For Josie

    On the day when
    the weight deadens
    on your shoulders
    and you stumble,
    may the clay dance
    to balance you.

    And when your eyes
    freeze behind
    the gray window
    and the ghost of loss
    gets in to you,
    may a flock of colors,
    indigo, red, green
    and azure blue
    come to awaken in you
    a meadow of delight.

    when the canvas frays
    in the curach* of thought
    and a stain of ocean
    blackens beneath you,
may there come across the waters
    a path of yellow moonlight
    to bring you safely home.

May the nourishment of the earth be yours,
may the clarity of light be yours,
may the fluency of the ocean be yours,
may the protection of the ancestors be yours.

    And so may a slow
    wind work these words
    of love around you,
    an invisible cloak
    to mind your life.

*curach = a small, rounded boat...

    Dear Friends,

Sally Hare, one of the first Courage to Teach Facilitators, and a participant in Parker's original Courage to Teach series, is offering a Courage retreat for WRITERS in the Santa Cruz Mountains at Presentation Center. Sally is a very gracious and deeply compassionate person, and if you are able to go, I know that you will find this to be a very special retreat. She is flying in all the way from the East Coast to lead this retreat in collaboration with the poet, John Fox. I hope that some of you will find this feasible.

  7. Courage to Lead Nominations
    02/28/2008 14:36:13 Kim Stokely
Hi All, Ken Saxon and I are preparing for the Courage to Lead retreats that will begin with an introductory retreat at the end of May and the full series beginning in the fall. We are really enthused about the opportunity these retreats will provide non-profit leaders. We have raised money for scholarships and are ready to move forward.

We have developed a nomination process where people can nominate a non-profit executive for the series who they would like to see be supported and nurtured in their professional and personal lives. We've had a number of people nominate a list of ED's or other nonprofit executive leaders who they think could benefit from a Courage to Lead series. Please consider either emailing us a list of names and organizations and we will contact them directly and let them know they've been nominated, or email them and let them know about the opportunity and give them our web link (www.couragetoleadnp.org) and brochure, or both.

We'd love to attract a great group of nonprofit leaders to kick off our program in the Bay Area. FYI, our brochure is attached, and our website link is below. We look forward to engaging with folks who are interested.

Thanks for your help in launching Courage to Lead for Bay Area Nonprofit Leaders. I appreciate it! I hope to hear back from you. Feel free to email me or call me at the number below.

    Best,
    Kim

    Dear Facilitators,
Every year we notify you of these residencies for pre-school through fifth grade teachers. Please forward on to any teachers you know who might benefit from this wonderful experience.
    Cheers,
    Robin

    TEACHER RESIDENCIES

Eighteen self-guided one-week residencies for pre-school through fifth grade teachers are sponsored by the Nancy M. and Douglas M. Yeager Family Foundation, in partnership with the Fetzer Institute and in cooperation with the GilChrist Retreat Center of the Fetzer Institute. Interested applicants who are not current teachers (such as school counselors, administrators, part-time instructors, or student teachers) may be considered based on potential benefits to students and/or availability of residencies.

One-week residencies in the summer of 2008 are offered in modern, fully furnished cottages at the GilChrist Retreat Center in southwestern Michigan. The residencies are available in July 2008
(July 1-7 or July 9 - 15). There is no residency fee to be paid by the applicant, and there is no allowance beyond the living facility paid by the sponsor. The teacher is responsible for travel expenses, meals and materials.

The residencies provide selected teachers with the opportunity to spend a quiet week of reflection, writing, reading, and planning for the following school year and beyond. The retreat setting and environment is ideal for a truly contemplative experience. The beautiful cottages, on wooded sites overlooking a restful and rolling meadow, provide a smoke-free, TV-free, phone-free and hassle-free environment.

These residencies are based on Nancy Yeager's lifelong interest in and commitment to childhood education. She was first an elementary school teacher and then later a teacher/director of a preschool in Kettering, Ohio. Her love for teaching inspired her family to establish these residencies at GilChrist, which she had visited a number of times and found to be a truly serene and beautiful setting.

Interested teachers should complete the application form by April 18, 2008, including:
    (1) a brief statement of his or her personal and professional objectives for the residency; and (2) any preference as to the retreat dates.

This is the sixth year that the residencies are being offered. Five were awarded in 2003, 10 in 2004, 17 in 2005, 19 in 2006, and 17 in 2007. The feedback from the teachers who participated has been extraordinarily positive. Teachers were from California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Tennessee, Washington, DC, and Wisconsin.

An application form for 2008 can be obtained online at www.fetzer.org or by e-mail at dglsyg@cs.com or by writing to:

    Hi all-

Hope this email finds you all well and happy and hope your new year is off to a great start.

I am writing this email to all of you in hopes of spreading the word. The zoo is looking to hire an education coordinator; someone with biology, zoology, natural science, environmental science, etc.

If you know of anyone that may be interested please have them contact Ken Knieland, Zoo Manager at 331-2010.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me.

    Thank You

    Joanne
