Welcome to the National Academy for Science and Mathematics Education Leadership! The Leadership Academy is a WestEd project supported with funding from the National Science Foundation. The Academy is an in-depth professional development program to enhance the knowledge, skills, and strategies of leaders of science and mathematics education reform, focusing especially on those with one to five years of experience. The goal of the Academy is to help new leaders of science and mathematics education reform in planning and carrying out wide scale changes at all levels of the education system.
Each year, the Academy accepts approximately 30 professionals new to science and mathematics reform leadership roles (Fellows) for a two-year participation including two professional development workshops per year. Experienced science and mathematics reform leaders (Mentors) coach Fellows on the role of reform leaders and provide support for Fellows' project plans. Fellowships are by application only. Recruitment for Cohort 4 Fellows will continue through the fall of 2002. Application information may be obtained by contacting Deanna Maier at (520) 888-2838 or via email at dmaier@wested.org.
The Leadership Academy is comprised of four cohort groups. Cohort 1 commenced in 1998 and includes 32 Fellows and 30 Mentors primarily from the science education community. Cohort 2 commenced in 1999 and includes 33 Fellows and 30 Mentors from both the science and mathematics education communities. Cohort 3 commenced in 2000 and includes 63 Fellows (half of which are new leaders and half which are NSF Presidential Awardees) as well as 75 Mentors from the science and mathematics education communities. Cohort 4 commenced in 2002 and consists of teacher leaders, directors and leaders in the NSF-funded systemic initiatives, directors of alternative educational centers, and district science and mathematics leaders. Many of the Cohort 2, 3, and 4 Mentors are Fellows from previous cohorts.
