Parent Education/Pre-School Success For Next Year 5/23/03 4:01 PM
Author: Bert Creighton III View Thread

Thank you for creating this discussion. It is a way for us (parents) to both share the positive benefits we have first-hand knowledge of and to urge our representatives to continue funding for the coming years of Parenting/Pre-school programs.

I have seen dramatic differences in children that participate with a parent in a program, versus those that start Kindergarten a year or two later, unprepared. Our state has an education system that places increasing pressure on everyone involved, both for higher test scores and also for moving subjects into earlier grades. Subjects in 2nd grade today were not introduced until the 4th-5th grade in the 60's. The only way - and the best way to prepare families for success in our education system is through parent/pre-school programs.

After 2 years of volunteering in 1st and 2nd grade classrooms, it is easy to see the great value from our local pre-school/parenting program. The children are ready to learn when they reach Kindergarten, and they are well into their development of skills required throughout the early grades.

There is also a significant benefit to those parents that participate. We gain so much, learning about how to be effective teachers and coaches (coaching learning) for our children. Participating in a parenting/pre-school program is the starting point for a better home learning environment, and also gives parents a better understanding of how to volunteer in our K-12 schools, as our kids move forward.

I strongly urge our representatives to fully fund parenting/pre-school programs, so that everyone in our State can benefit from a better prepared children, parents with improve skills and an education system that sees life long learners in each and every family member.
