In addition to basic education, ESL, vocatonal training, the following area need serious consideration: Parenting, Health and Safety as well as programs for Older Adults. All of these prorams are needed and necessary.
The minimum qualifcation for non-credit in Commuhnity Colleges also provies the local academic senate to approve quivalencies for teachers wich can include Secondary Single Subject Crednetials needed for high school programs and basic skills.
Criteria for evaluating how well California's adult education system is meeting students educatioin goals is as follows:(1) number of job placements for students enrolled in vocational programs, (2) number of students who matriculate to college level course work (3) survey students response to training as related to their personal goals.
Community Colleges are able to provide a broader array of courses, especially in vocational programs since equipment, faculty and facilities are shared bwteen credit and non credit programs.
Lets remember that there are more students in need of services than all non credit/adult schools could serve- demand is greater than supply. Providing programs in a variety of settings improves access for all students . Karen Meyers, Vice President, Community Education, Mt. San Antonio College
