As technologies evolve, opportunities for more effective methods to learn and manage education arise, and educational pioneers are clearing new paths to more powerful and effective learning landscapes. Examples of applying these new technologies to educational improvement and an examination of how some of these technologies work are the focus of this topic.

School Leadership Technology Blog

The University of Minnesota School Technology Leadership Initiative has launched a new blog aimed at K-12 technology leaders The blog is based on a simple premise: that there are too many information channels for any school technology leader to track. The School Technology Leadership blog saves school leaders time by aggregating information from a variety of web sites, listservs, e-mail newsletters, print publications, and other sources. The blog utilizes a distributed authorship model to accomplish its goal of being the ?one-stop information source for school technology leadership issues.? Each blog author monitors no more than a small handful of information sources and posts items from those sources on a regular basis. Together the contributors create a powerful resource for K-12 school administrators, educational leadership preparation programs, and others.

	The November 2003 issue of this Bi-monthly newsletter from the BLE Group is focused on handheld devices. In addition to recent development in devices and applications they include advice on purchasing and implementing handheld programs.

The Use of Metadata for Identification and Retrieval of Resources for K-12 Education

Educators and publishers in the field of K-12 education have long had an interest in identifying and retrieving curriculum materials by the learning objectives these materials serve. A review of the efforts undertaken to accomplish this goal highlights a number of continuing problems and informs a set of criteria for the development of a schema that would be useful for identifying and retreiving educational resources.
