Description: Students excel when teachers know the content they teach and are equipped with multiple teaching strategies and skills. To increase their skills over time, teachers must be given intellectually rigorous, collaborative professional learning opportunities. This session looks at why this is especially true for teachers at underperforming schools and examines the role of statewide professional development standards as a policy tool for ensuring ongoing, job-embedded learning for every teacher.

Inquiry Questions:
  • What is "high-quality professional development," and how can these standards be applied in underperforming schools?
  • How does a school district create an environment that builds and sustains teachers' abilities to successfully teach students in underperforming schools?
  • What issues do states face in trying to implement professional development standards?
