Description: To better prepare teachers for challenging urban settings, innovative programs and partnerships are being established. For example, the award-winning City Heights teacher preparation program—a partnership of San Diego State University's (SDSU's) School of Teacher Education and the San Diego City Schools—places SDSU student teachers for a year with schools in the City Heights redevelopment area. Candidates learn state-of-the-art technology applications , as well as how to develop curricula for diverse learners in urban classrooms and ensure literacy development across different subject areas. This session examines the City Heights program and the lessons it suggests for urban-focused, university-district partnerships for teacher preparation.

Inquiry Questions:
  • What factors prompted formation of this university-district partnership, and what factors help sustain it?
  • How does the City Heights program prepare new teachers for the rigorous demands specific to urban classrooms?
  • What systemic conditions and policies contribute to the success of programs like this?
