Incentives to Attract High-Quality Teachers to Hard-to-Staff Schools

|
| Description: | In the Denver Public Schools, the Professional Compensation for Teachers program (ProComp) has replaced the former salary structure in which teacher compensation was based on experience and accumulated graduate credit. Under ProComp, teachers are evaluated in part by student achievement growth. Other criteria include knowledge and skills, peer and supervisor appraisals, experience, and education level. This session examines this compensation system, which was designed to support school district goals of bringing all system resources together to improve student learning.
Inquiry Questions:
- What evaluation methods are used to create pay-for-performance compensation structures? What criteria and indicators do the Denver Public Schools use to evaluate teachers' performance?
- How did Denver Public Schools and the union come to agreement on pay for performance? What are the implications for other districts?
- What system conditions and policies have made it possible for ProComp to get off the ground?
