Biography
A nationally recognized educator, John Bennion directs a federally funded study examining how states can improve teacher quality, remove barriers to entering the teaching profession, and make teacher preparation more competency-based. Bennion also directs the U.S./Mexico Educational Standards Project, sponsored by the Oquirrh Institute, which tracks the academic progress of the 30,000 Mexican immigrant and migrant students within Utah's school system to provide better continuity in their education. Over a 25-year period, Bennion served as Superintendent of Schools in four districts —Rochester, New York; Bloomington, Minnesota; Provo, Utah; and Salt Lake City, Utah. During his years in public school administration, Bennion developed a keen interest in improving education opportunities for low-income students. In 1998, he organized the Utah Urban School Alliance, bringing together representatives of 42 low-income schools from eight school districts to develop comprehensive school reform strategies. In 2002, Bennion received the American Association of School Administrators Distinguished Service Award for his lifetime contributions to education.
