Biography
Under Gándara's leadership, Policy Analysis of California Education (PACE) is completing a survey of the professional development needs of California's English learner teachers. Gándara has authored and co-authored books and articles on peer group influence and college-attendance behavior of low-income Latino and other ethnic minority students; immigrant students, bilingual education policy, and the public schools; high academic achievement of low-income Mexican Americans; Mexican American and education mobility; and mathematics instruction in multicultural classrooms. Gándara served as President of the Sociology of Education Association, Chair of both the University of California Linguistic Minority Research Institute and the Hispanic Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association, and is a member of both the Latino Eligibility Task Force and Bilingual/Crosscultural Panel of the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
