![]() Speaker Ruth Schoenbach Director Strategic Literacy Initiative, WestEd rschoen@wested.org Biography Ruth Schoenbach joined WestEd in 1988 and serves as Director of the Strategic Literacy Initiative, which focuses on increasing access to higher-level literacy for middle and high school students. She is coauthor of Reading for Understanding: A Guide to Improving Reading in Middle and High School Classrooms. Schoenbach has designed and managed numerous innovative arts and literacy-based programs over the past 25 years, including the Summer Writing Institute for 5th grade students, the Learning Integrated through Video Experience Summer Program for high school students - both in the San Francisco (CA) Unified School District - and Canciones de Companeros, a songbook and tape of Spanish children's songs. She has taught language arts, music, and English as a Second Language at the elementary, secondary, and adult levels. As a leader in literacy-based education reform, she has served in an advisory capacity to various local and national reform projects, most notably as a member of the National Research Council Committee on a Feasibility Study for a Strategic Education Research Program. Schoenbach holds a BA in social sciences (psychology/anthropology) from the University of California, Berkeley, a Bilingual Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from San Francisco State University, and an EdM in teaching, curriculum, and learning environments from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
