Glen Harvey
Chief Executive Officer
WestEd
gharvey@wested.org

Biography
Glen H. Harvey has served as WestEd's Chief Executive Officer since June 1997.

In those seven years, she has led a transformation of WestEd to become more mission-driven and quality-focused. The agency's emphasis is now on performing the highest quality work to promote excellence, achieve equity, and improve learning for children, youth, and adults.

A key to CEO Harvey's leadership philosophy is her dedication that WestEd produce significant and positive impact, especially for those children and their families in greatest need.

She also emphasizes the importance to the agency of continuous growth so that WestEd has the capacity to meet the increased needs of its clients, in this country and internationally. During her tenure as CEO, WestEd has grown from $28.2 M in annual revenues in FY1997 to $71.6 M in FY2003. With 10 offices in 1997, the agency now has 17, during which time it has added 150 staff.

WestEd has received recognition as among the best in its class in its work in research, development, and direct service. Its Western Regional Educational Laboratory has been designated the national leader among labs in the field of education assessment. WestEd's products have won numerous national awards for content and design during Harvey's tenure.

A critical priority for Harvey at WestEd has been creating an internal atmosphere that fosters staff productivity and creativity. Resulting from these efforts have been consistently, highly positive employee ratings by staff in surveys conducted by an independent research firm. And in 2004, the San Francisco Business Times and the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal recognized WestEd as one of the Bay Area's "50 Best Places to Work" in a competition where more than 200 for-profit and nonprofit companies were judged on their benefits, policies, and practices — and how their Bay Area employees rate them.

Her commitment to assuring equal opportunity at the agency has resulted in WestEd, in 2003, receiving a special Award of Appreciation from the Office of Federal Contracts Compliance, Pacific Region.

Glen Harvey's job includes overseeing an extensive range of exemplary education research, developmental, and service programs focused in such content areas as: teaching and learning, professional development, instructional technology, math/science education, student assessment, education accountability, language and cultural diversity, education policy, teacher preparation and retention, education leadership, early childhood education, alcohol and other drug abuse prevention, and at-risk youth.

Before taking the reigns at WestEd, Harvey served as Executive Director of Learning Innovations and of The Regional Laboratory for Educational Improvement of the Northeast & Islands, both based in New England. She also held positions with The NETWORK, Inc., the National Institute of Education, and several other education agencies.

She earned a BA in psychology and sociology and an MA in social and philosophical foundations of education from the University of Kentucky, plus an AM in philosophy and a PhD in philosophy of education from Stanford University.
