Overview

California has been working toward a state accountability system that integrates federal Title I requirements. California encourages districts to embed the state system within a local system that responds to local conditions and supports continual district and school improvement. This section describes systems of accountability at the federal and state levels.
  • Federal Accountability Legislation describes the current federal legislation, in particular, Title I accountability provisions, in No Child Left Behind.

  • State Accountability Legislation describes California's Public Schools Accountability Act and companion legislation, Pupil Promotion and Retention.

District administrators are responsible for responding to the federal and state accountability systems and providing schools with leadership, management, resources, and professional development to meet or exceed state expectations for student achievement.
