Full Description San Francisco Unified School District's Research, Planning, and Evaluation (RPE) Department conducts a series of interconnected, applied workshops on data analysis and use of results for all school administrators. The district models accountability -- it formally evaluates department effectiveness based on state professional standards. School site administrator's formal evaluation includes school performance on district goals for student achievement. Targets are set for each site administrator such as student academic achievement gains, lower disciplinary actions, and higher student attendance rates. The Research, Planning, and Evaluation (RPE) Department produces the data reports on a two-page form for site administrators and their supervisors. RPE conducts a formal evaluation of 19 district departments or services and produces a report of results. School site principals and directors complete a written survey at the end of each year and the report is disseminated in the fall. Four items are rated for each department or service using a four-point Likert scale from "1" (strongly disagree) to "4" (strongly agree). 1. The department has shown it can provide the services I expect from it. 2. When I try to communicate with this department I am able to speak to somebody or leave a message. 3. I am confident that when I make a request from this department, it will lead to action in a timely manner. 4. Overall, I am very satisfied with the services of this department. Average scores as well as total responses per option are computed for elementary, middle, and high schools. The evaluation report summarizes findings for each department and makes general conclusions about overall district services. In this district, accountability is not focused solely on schools -- the district models being accountable by asking its "clients," the school administrators, to provide formal feedback on district services. |
